Branding is about bonding emotionally with people in their daily life

Your PowerPoint design should be a reflection of your brand. This means its look and feel and its messages should be consistent with the personality of your company and your supportive promotional material. The way your presentation delivers information will help the audience create a picture of your organisation. You won't communicate effectively if your PowerPoint design is not thought through and delivered well.

Simplicity

The saying "less is more" definitely applies to PowerPoint design. Don't clutter your slides with information. There should be a logical order to the information so the viewer can make sense of the messages. Remember, the slides are just supportive material. The simpler the layout, the more powerful your visual message will become.

The importance of branding and creating a visual theme

The visual theme of your PowerPoint presentation should be custom designed to reflect your brand and the personality of the company. That way, it will be much more memorable and ensure the audience remembers your brand when they leave the presentation.

Photography and images

Photographs, illustrations and diagrams also play a large part in your branding. Using clip art or bad quality photos creates a negative impression of your company and undermines the professionalism of your presentation. Use professional quality photographs from a stock library, or shoot images specifically for your company to use - both for PowerPoint design and for the rest your marketing collateral.

Branding a PowerPoint presentation

What are the feelings you want the viewer to come away with?

Do you want them to think of your company as innovative, creative, technology-savvy, service-focused, fun, professional? Then reflect these things in your PowerPoint design and graphics, as well as supportive print and web based marketing material.

Everything you produce for your company needs to reflect these core personality traits. If it does, the audience will walk away inspired with a positive and clear picture of your company.

The opening title page is a perfect opportunity to present these graphic design qualities. This first slide sets the tone and personality for the presentation, so make sure that it reflects your branding and personality. Subsequent pages should reflect the style created on the title page. Text-based slides may have a consistent graphic in line with your branding at the top and bottom of the slide, or used as a separator.

Some other tips for PowerPoint design

  • Don’t have too much text on any one slide
  • Keep the graphic design style consistent for each slide - layout, colour scheme, fonts. Don't change the design of the footers and headers.
  • Readability is the key. Use large, clean fonts. If there's too much information on a slide, break it in two.
  • Be brief. Use bulleted phrases rather than sentences.
  • Use only one or two fonts in your presentation.
  • Avoid using all caps, as they are less readable.
  • Use bold, italics, or colour to emphasis information.
  • Keep your backgrounds very simple. Avoid placing text over graphics and imagery, as that makes your message harder to read.
